Meta has named Kunal Shah, the founder of Indian fintech platform CRED, as the next global CEO of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart after nearly seven years at the helm. The announcement was paired with a $900 million financing round for CRED led by Meta, structured through a mix of primary and secondary share purchases that makes the social media giant a minority investor in the Indian company.
Shah built CRED into one of India's most recognisable fintech brands after an earlier stint founding FreeCharge, one of the country's pioneering digital payments startups. CRED today counts roughly 17 million monthly active users on a platform built around credit card bill payments and rewards. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg credited Shah with bringing a "builder mentality and global perspective" to an app used by more than two billion people worldwide.
The leadership change marks one of the most prominent instances of an Indian startup founder stepping into the top job at a major global technology platform, and it comes at a moment when Meta has been investing heavily in deepening WhatsApp's role in payments and commerce, areas where India has been a key testing ground. CRED's day-to-day leadership will pass to Miten Sampat, who has overseen the company's strategy and finance since 2020, while Cathcart moves into a new Meta role building products from scratch.
For India's startup ecosystem, the appointment is being read as a signal of how seriously Silicon Valley now weighs homegrown fintech talent, and it adds to a growing list of Indian-origin executives leading major global technology companies. It also ties Meta's fortunes more closely to the Indian market, where WhatsApp already has its largest user base anywhere in the world.
