The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) is rolling out the Miyawaki method of urban afforestation across several green spaces in the city, aiming to create dense, fast-growing native forest patches in spaces far smaller than conventional plantation drives would require. The technique, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, has been adopted in cities worldwide over the past decade as a way to rapidly restore tree cover in dense urban settings.

The Miyawaki approach works by planting a mix of native species — typically a dozen or more varieties — at high density on soil specifically prepared with organic amendments to mimic natural forest floor conditions. Because the method relies on multiple plant layers competing and supporting each other much as they would in a natural forest, it produces canopy cover and biodiversity far faster than traditional single-species plantations, often reaching maturity in years rather than decades, while requiring only a fraction of the land area.

For a coastal industrial city like Visakhapatnam, which faces both urban heat-island effects and air quality pressure from its port and industrial activity, small dense forest patches distributed across neighbourhoods can meaningfully improve local microclimates and air quality even where large contiguous green spaces aren't available. Cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, and several abroad have used the method in exactly this way — converting odd-shaped vacant plots, roadside strips, and small parks into pocket forests.

VMRDA's adoption of the method signals a shift toward more land-efficient, ecologically grounded approaches to urban greening in Visakhapatnam, moving beyond the manicured ornamental landscaping that has typically characterised municipal park development. The success of the initiative will likely be judged by survival rates of the saplings through the city's first dry season and by measurable improvements in local air quality and shade cover in the chosen sites over the next two to three years.
