These initiatives signal a deliberate and coordinated push to position Andhra Pradesh as a multi-domain hub spanning fighter aircraft development, naval propulsion, unmanned systems, space launch capabilities and strategic maritime assets. The developments reflect both national priorities of self-reliance and the state’s evolving role in India’s defence architecture.

At Puttaparthi in Sri Sathya Sai district, work has begun on a Core Integration and Flight-Testing Centre dedicated to accelerating the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme and future indigenous platforms. This facility will serve as a critical node for design validation, integration and testing of fifth-generation combat aircraft. The location complements existing strengths in the region while creating high-skill employment in advanced aerospace engineering. Parallel to this, the state is expanding its footprint in unmanned aerial systems through the Drone City at Orvakal in Kurnool district. Announced as India’s first dedicated Drone City on a 300-acre campus with the world’s largest common drone testing facility, the project is projected to generate over 40,000 direct and indirect jobs while positioning the state as a leader in next-generation unmanned technologies.

Visakhapatnam continues to strengthen its position as the naval and strategic maritime core. A major Naval Systems Manufacturing Facility is being established at T Sirasapalli, anchored by Bharat Forge’s new Marine Gas Turbine Facility. This private-sector initiative will deliver repair, overhaul and, crucially, indigenous development and qualification of marine gas turbines for the first time in India. The facility is co-located with the Eastern Naval Command and Naval Dockyard, enabling faster turnaround for frontline warships. It directly addresses long-standing dependence on imported propulsion systems and supports operational readiness across the fleet. Nearby, at Rambilli approximately 50 kilometres south of Visakhapatnam, Project Varsha (INS Varsha) is advancing as India’s dedicated nuclear submarine base. The facility features underground pens designed to house and protect the growing fleet of nuclear-powered ballistic missile and attack submarines, enhancing the country’s second-strike nuclear deterrence and maritime strategic reach in the Indo-Pacific.

These new projects build upon established assets that already give Andhra Pradesh a layered strategic profile. Sriharikota remains India’s primary spaceport, while Nagayalanka in Krishna district supports missile development and testing capabilities. Sri City in Chittoor district has long functioned as a critical supply-chain catalyst, hosting precision manufacturing units that serve both commercial aerospace and defence offset programmes. Companies operating there have contributed components and logistics support for major platforms, demonstrating that the state already possesses mature industrial linkages that new defence investments can leverage and expand.

The economic and strategic implications extend well beyond individual projects. Defence and aerospace manufacturing corridors with preferential policies are attracting both public-sector undertakings and private players, generating high-value employment and technology absorption opportunities. For a state that faced significant economic disruption after bifurcation, these investments represent a pathway toward high-tech industrialisation, particularly in the Rayalaseema and coastal regions. The multiplier effects — from component suppliers and testing infrastructure to skilled workforce development — can catalyse broader manufacturing ecosystems and position Andhra Pradesh as a reliable partner in India’s quest for defence self-reliance.

Yet the scale of these ambitions also brings responsibilities. Successful execution will require sustained investment in technical education, robust infrastructure connectivity and careful environmental and security planning, especially around sensitive nuclear and strategic sites. Equally important is ensuring that local communities benefit meaningfully through employment, skill programmes and ancillary economic activity rather than remaining peripheral to high-value projects. The coming years will test whether the state can convert these foundation stones into a cohesive, world-class ecosystem that delivers both national security dividends and inclusive regional growth.

In the larger picture, Andhra Pradesh’s emergence as a multi-faceted defence and aerospace hub illustrates how federal cooperation, when aligned with clear strategic vision, can strengthen India’s overall posture. By concentrating capabilities across air, naval, space, missile and unmanned domains within one state while linking them to existing industrial bases, the country gains both depth and resilience.
