Vignan's University, near Vadlamudi in Guntur district, has opened a new "Google AI Lab" on its campus, built in partnership with Google and backed by an investment of about Rs 1.5 crore. The university said the lab is meant to give students hands-on access to current AI tools rather than just classroom instruction in the subject, as it expands its artificial intelligence and machine learning programme.
As part of the tie-up, the university has taken a Google Workspace for Education Plus subscription, which brings Gemini AI features into students' everyday academic work, including help with building presentations, analysing data, producing video content and improving their writing. Students will also get access to Google's professional certification tracks in cloud engineering, machine learning, data analytics and cybersecurity, credentials increasingly sought by recruiters in those fields.
Dr. Bodapati Jyotsnadevi, head of the university's AIML department, said the lab is designed to function as a personal AI tutor for students, supporting everything from coursework to hackathons, startup incubation and industry-linked projects. Students from the data science and electronics streams who have already used the lab said the tools were helping them work faster on data-heavy assignments and research projects.
The launch adds to a string of AI-related investments in Andhra Pradesh's education and innovation ecosystem over the past year, as the state government and private institutions look to position Amaravati and its surrounding campuses as a hub for AI training and research, alongside separate efforts such as state-backed computing infrastructure initiatives aimed at students, researchers and startups.
